Fuentes de Ayódar

Fuentes is one of the four municipalities of the Barony of Ayódar, which formerly belonged to the Moorish King of Valencia, Zayd Abu Zayd, who, in a public deed (Teruel, 1236) ceded the place, alongside other possessions, to the church of Segorbe. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, Fuentes was left deserted, and was repopulated by families from Godella in 1611. The Town Charter stipulates the agreements that were held between the settlers and the Lord of the Barony, Don Cristóbal Funes. Some of these are extremely interesting, inspired by the Fueros (Legal Charters) of the Kingdom of Valencia and written in Valencian, since that was the language spoken by the settlers.
