The origins of this fortress could be Roman although it’s got Islamic and medieval structures. It’s located on a hill to the north of the town.
In Roman times, it was likely a watchtower that visually linked with other nearby towers, the purpose of which was to secure the Via Augusta.
The Muslim-style grounds were completely reformed with subsequent Christian structures. An irregular layout that adapts to the orography, it had three staggered levels:
- The upper level or defensive area where there are towers, a water cistern, the remains of the walls and auxiliary structures.
- The middle level, where the changes made during the 19th century civil wars to adapt it for guards can be observed.
- The lower level, which consists of a wall that defends the access road to the fortress.
