It is significantly relevant to mention the renovation and maintenance work being undertaken by the Cultural Association “Mar i Vent” (Sea and Wind). These works have been carried out on pieces related to the sea world which have been donated by private collectors.
The Sea Museum is important because it contributes to the preservation of the roots and heritage of the sea and fishing in Castellón.
The Sea Museum contains 274 pieces and more than 70 photographs related to the port of Castellón, its activities and the fishing in the Columbretes Islands.
The Museum is divided into different sections: the first one is related to naval construction where you can find scale model boats, boat blueprints, a shipwright’s working board, timbers (frames), a plan of a late nineteenth century “llaud” (small fishing boat) and a photographic exhibition detailing the shipwright master Don Isidro Mir Olivares building a “llaud” in 2008.
The second section is about fishing apparatus like mechanical parts, lanterns, different models of fishing gear, moulds, hooks, wires and longlines.
In the Museum you can also find equipment related to communications, to sonar, to rescue, to radar, to navigation and safety.
The Sea Museum highlights the importance of some pieces: a 1930 wooden boat used in the Torrenostra beach for fishing; the first semi-diesel engine built in Nasio garage from the Grao of Castellón in 1962; a 1891 “Estorí” used for nets transportation. Hanging from the ceiling you can also view a 1902 trawling net, a seine net, a fyke net (for eel fishing) and an anchor.
Other significant pieces you can find in the Museum are: a late eighteenth century Bossell Real, which was used to drag boats over the beach, a late eighteenth century rig (two mounted pulley rigs), a 1923 longline, a 1891 longline basket, a wooden mould for the construction of glass floats for seine fishing and a propeller of a seine boat.
The Museum desplays a collection of scale model boats: a trawler boat or Bou, a seiner or Fanal and a common fishing boat (trimmel and longline).
In a third section of the Museum there are fishing tools, a water cistern and other equipment. A complete biography of the last century is also available in the Museum.
