Originally founded by the inhabitants of Castellet (a castle perched high up on one of the district's many mountains) a few years after 1238, after the castle was given to the Archbishop of Narbonne, alongside other lands from the Kingdom of Valencia. It appears that prior to this date it was mainly occupied by Moors, who lived in Fanzara for many years, leaving an indelible mark on its history.
The main activity is agriculture, which is combined with a relatively weak tile industry. The population works either in the fields, in factories, in construction or in certain professions.
