Archaeological Sites

Alto de la Fuente Site

This site is located in the “Alto de la Fuente” area, very close to the River Palancia. It is a privileged spot as it offers easy access to the river resources and the hill’s height makes it easy to defend.  Remains have been found in the area, although no structures nor signs of a settlement have been found. They were possibly destroyed when the land was ploughed, or are buried underground.

Rochinas Site

Located in the “Marín” area.

This site is located in the upper part of the “de Rochinas” hill, in a bend in the River Palancia. This privileged spot offered easy access to the river resources and the hill’s height made it easy to defend. The settlement consists of 17 rooms connected by a central hallway and measures 35 m by 19 m. This suggests that the number of people who lived there did not surpass one hundred. The site layout is currently preserved in good condition, although the settlement is understandably in ruins.

Hoyo Site

Located in the “Hoyo” area.

Human remains and evidence of burials have been found in the area. A grave in very good condition has been found, measuring 0.5 m wide, 1.9 m long and 0.5 m deep, and covered by a group of irregularly shaped stones. A skeleton was found inside.
The majority of the remains are located in the Segorbe archaeological museum.

Altico Site

Located in the “Hoyo” area.

This walled enclosure is in the upper part of a small hill. It is an irregular shape that measures 15 by 6 metres. Two structures can be made out in the southern section of the enclosure. They were possibly 2 bedrooms and have a thick exterior wall measuring about 2.5 metres. No pottery remains have been found in the area, although the valley’s cemetery possibly belonged to this settlement. Perhaps a study of this area in the future would shed light on these questions.
