Cathedral Museum

Segorbe

The Cathedral Museum is considered one of the most important collections of holy art in the Valencian Community. It features particularly impressive Gothic altarpieces, a splendid collection of paintings, sculptures, and items of precious metalwork.

The museum comprises works from the cathedral, its cloister and chapels.

Special mention should be made to a jewel of the most exquisite art: the «Madonna with Child», in Carrara marble by the Italian master Donatello. Some 16th century Limousin enamels must also be noted.

The largest section is the one dedicated to painting, focused mainly on religious subjects. Particularly important is Gothic painting in the «Early Masters Gallery», with panels and altarpieces such as: Saint Luke; Mary’s Visitation; Santa Clara and Santa Eulalia; the Last Supper; works from Jacomart, Reixach, Martín Torner, Pere Serra, Rodrigo de Osona the younger, etc. Also important is the «Vicente Macip Gallery» (father of the Spanish Renaissance painter Juan de Juanes), with panels from the cathedral’s great main altarpiece, painted between 1525 and 1531, considered a major work in the Renaissance painting in Spain. The altarpiece was dismantled in 1791 and it can now be admired in the Chapel of the Saviour.
