The church of Sant Joan is one of the oldest still conserved in the province of Castellón. It was built in the 13th century and remodelled in the 18th century. The style is Gothic and looks like a fortress, which is why it may have been built taking advantage of the walls of some old fortress, possibly the old castle, or it simply may have been fortified at some time. The crenelated silver tower and the gold cross in the Benafigos municipal coat of arms refer to the Church of St. John the Baptist. Inside, you can see different Gothic arches as well as the 20th century Chapel of the Virgen of Ortisella.
