The different cultures that have inhabited Ares del Maestrat have known to recognise the geostrategic importance of the hill on which it is located. From the eastern plateau of this natural watchtower, a wide landscape can be seen and the vertical cliffs that surround it are a natural advantage for its defence. The Ares Castle was built on the highest site of the spot, with two fortified and almost concentric staggered enclosures, which made it practically impregnable. The town centre grew at its feet, also protected by a last walled enclosure.
In the Cave Museum you can take a journey through time, from prehistoric times to the present day, by visiting this impressive site excavated in the rock.
