Xert

A former subject of the Cervera castle, granted its Town Charter by the Master of the Hospital in 1235. The town of Xert takes in both the upper area, the former site of the castle and home to the old church, and the plain down below, where the town has developed in modern times.

Economy

Its inhabitants live mainly on agrigulture and livestock.

What to see

In the lower reaches of the town, we can find remarkable mansions from the 15th-18th centrury. In recent years, significant progress has been made in recovering much of the old town, thanks to individual efforts on the part of many locals to restore and rehabilitate their ruined homes. Up above, we find the primitive Asunción de Nuestra Señora parish church, from the late 13th century, while the new church can be found down on the plain, in the modern part of the village.

Landscape

Xert's landscape is typical of the Maestrazgo region, with vast expanses of rainfed crop lands, often lying on terraced hillside areas by the Molas, or flat-topped mountain elevations, formed by the succession of layers of more or less resistant stone. The Mola Murada is a notable example.
