The town has Moorish origins. Its history runs parallel to that of the Moors; it is an example of a typical Arab mountain village here in Castellón, and following the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, it suffered from the effects of depopulation, which it has overcome only gradually, in fierce competition with the depopulation suffered further inland due to the agrarian crisis.
It is an agricultural-based economy, with hazelnuts as the main crop.
The town is situated on a gently-sloping hillside, overlooking the plain. Its streets are narrow and perfectly adapted to the mountainous nature of the terrain, while its houses and architecture show clear evidence of Moorish influences. The Town Hall and the Abbey House are its most prominent architectural elements, alongside the parish church.
It offers beautiful mountain scenery, with lush pine forests amidst which nestle a number of springs.
