It seems likely that modern-day Sueras owes its existence to four Muslim centres of population, or aljamas. Remains have been found in the villages of Benalises and Suera Alta, which, following the Christian conquest, come together to form a single centre, what we now know as Suera Baja. The name of the municipality has the same meaning as the Arabic word Sukhayra, by virtue of its defensive location up on a hill and protected by a steep mountain.
Its geographical fate, its sharing a border with La Plana region, has led to its people commuting daily to work in the ceramics industry in Onda, Vila-real and L'Alcora, in particular. Agriculture has become a part-time occupation, almost a mere distraction, good only for supplying household products.
Strolling through the streets of Sueras, we can stop off at the Plaza de la Iglesia (church square), and enjoy walking down the Calle del Retor, the Calle del Raval, and other streets such as Calle Pelota, Mayor and Nueva. The Fountain and the Abbey House can be found in the Plaza Mayor (main square), within the old town, while the Cultural and Recreational Centre is located in the Plaza Font-Seca.
Suera's ecological situation is a product of the spectacular natural landscapes offered up by the foothills of the Sierra Espadán. The terrain is very rugged, with prominent peaks including La Serra, La Atalaya, El Tosal and El Casalet. The climate is temperate.
