After Iberian and Roman settlements, the Moors settled here until well in the 17th century, and remnants of the three cultures can be found throughout the municipal district. It was a Papal area and a gateway into the County of Cirat. The town appears on maps from the 12th century under the name Torre la Higuara, and was given its current name by James I.

Economy
It has typical mountain crops, including honey, almonds, olives and extremely high quality olive oil. Gastronomy is also important, with many typical dishes unique to the town.What to see
