After Iberian and Roman settlements, the Moors settled here until well in the 17th century, and remnants of the three cultures can be found throughout the municipal district. It was a Papal area and a gateway into the County of Cirat. The town appears on maps from the 12th century under the name Torre la Higuara, and was given its current name by James I.

Economy

It has typical mountain crops, including honey, almonds, olives and extremely high quality olive oil. Gastronomy is also important, with many typical dishes unique to the town.
What to see
Be sure to visit: the Church in honour of the Immaculate Conception, the Defense Tower, the Maricalva fountain, in the centre of the town, and various Arabic-style houses.

Landscape

The relief is steep, with some peaks surpassing 1000 metres, from which you can glimpse the sea. The climate is Mediterranean, fostering the growth of abundant vegetation, chiefly cork trees and pine forests. The town has an elevation of 672 metres.
