Although it is credited with having Islamic origins, human settlements are believed to have existed prior to the invasion. It was the domain and seat for a permanent baron and for the duke of Villahermosa. During the 19th century, the last baron sold his property to the villagers and left. It was one of the last Moorish strongholds.
Economy
The local economy revolves around agriculture. There is also construction, both in and outside the village. Livestock and agricultural industries, once important, have almost disappeared.
What to see
The Medieval Castle Tower (Torre del Castillo Medieval), Tower of the Dominican Order's Convent (Torre del Convento de los Padres Dominicos) (17th century), Parish Church, Cementery and Calvary. It has three distinct neighbourhoods: the Centre, the Eras and the Barranco.
Landscape
The terrain is rugged, with large mountains and spectacular gorges.Continental climate. Less than 400 m altitude. The mountains are rich in vegetation, although this can sometimes be impenetrable. Lush valleys and natural river canyons.
