Bell Tower

Vinaròs

The bell tower, with a square base, measures approximately 33 meters high and has the solidity and vigorousness that is characteristic of purely military architecture, with walls that reach a thickness of 170 cm. Inside the tower, there can be distinguished four floors with their main functions: on the first one there was, the prison, popularly known as "kennel"; on the second floor, the was the clock machinery; the third floor is the most diaphanous floor; and the fourth comprises the belfry. The bells were also used as a defensive mechanism: the bells were rang in order to warn the town about the attacks of the corsairs and pirates, this was called “toque a moro”. We must emphasize the spiral staircase and the arches placed in the different rooms.
