It was founded on the 20th of February 1274 by King James I, separating it from the municipal district of Burriana. It has enjoyed continuous representation in Les Corts (Valencian Autonomous Parliament) ever since it was founded.
In 1329, the Fueros of Aragón (Treaty), through which it was founded, were replaced with those of Valencia.
From 1740-1780, it became one of the main hubs for the production, distribution and export of textiles. Also noteworthy are the production and sale of citrus fruits, and a prominent ceramic tile industry.
From the Motxa Tower, head down to the porticoed Plaza Mayor (main square). The Archpriest Main church dedicated to San Jaime, the central shopping area, the San Pascual Basilica, the Carmen Convent and the Cristo del Hospital (christ of the hospital chapel) are all well worth a visit.
