La Tinença or Setena de Benifassà is made up of seven localities (Ballestar, Bel, Boixar, Castell de Cabres, Coratxar, Fredes and Pobla de Benifassà); it once belonged to the Abbot of the Monastery, now occupied by Carthusian nuns of the Order of Saint Bruno. During the Muslim rule, the life of the region developed around the Arabic castle of Beni-Hassan. Later, it was conquered by King James I who ordered that the first Cistercian monastery in the Region of Valencia be constructed right next to the castle.
