The site is of great landscape value and very picturesque, conserving much of the remains of its defensive architecture as well as important religious buildings and interesting examples of popular architecture. Due to the urban development at the foot of a castle, it can be related to other towns in Castellón such as Morella, Portell, Cervera del Maestre and Culla, among others. It was a very important town in the history of the local region during certain periods. Apart from the remains that indicate the existence of a pre-historic settlement, there are many examples of intense Romanization, which leads to the assumption of the existence of a settlement there. Numerous Roman tombstones with Latin inscriptions as well as coins and ceramic remains have been found at various points in the town and within the municipal area.
