Its origins lie in an Arabic hamlet which gradually grew into a village through the incorporation of surrounding rural houses. It suffered from severe depopulation following the expulsion of the Moors in 1609. Its recovery was aided by industrial activity, in particular the mining of cobalt throughout the 16th-18th century.
