It has Moorish origins, although Iberian and Medieval remains have been found. It had a thriving livestock industry during the Middle Ages, as well as intensive trade, fuelled by the exportation of wool. It was granted a Town Charter in 1238, by Blasco de Alagón. Its town walls and the various "peirons" (stone or brick pillars placed just outside many towns, marking the beginning of a pathway) are evidence of its long and storied history.
