In 1246, the Infante Don Pedro of Portugal, granted the town its charter, on behalf of James I. Roman remains have been found in the settlement known as Lessera. It plays an active role in all of the wars for the independence of Morella, which is achieved in 1691. It also takes part in the Carlist wars, with a special mention for the legendary soldier known as "El Groc".

Economy


Industries include pig, sheep and cattle farming. There is a tights factory. The service sector has also become hugely important, serving as the commercial centre for neighboring villages and for some parts of Teruel.
What to see
Landmarks include the Plaza Mayor, known for its arcades, the Osset and Miró Palaces and the Casa de la Vila (old Town Hall), the San Miguel church, the Calle de la Pelota, the 13th-century furnace and the Parish Church. There are also Gothic elements, the frescoes of Juan Francisco Cruella and the Fort, Maçaner, and Berga palaces.
Landscape
Located at 720 m above sea level. Surrounded by the mountains of La Garumba, San Marcos, Roca Roja and Mola de Sant Roc. The weather is cold in winter and hot in summer, although the temperature does drop at night. It is surrounded by the rivers Caldés, Cantavieja and Bergantes, which together form a fork shape, from which it derives its name.
