Benlloch has its roots in the Muslim hamlets (alquerías) of Benifaixó and Tahalfazar, names that reveal the town's Moorish origins. It once belonged to Miravet castle and it was resettled in 1250 by bishop Ponç de Torrellas. The remains of Iberian burial grounds have been found in Els Fondos.

Economy

Benlloch's economy is primarily based on agriculture and livestock, with pig and sheep farming. There is little industry to speak of, with a turrón (nougat) factory, an animal feed factory and a grating factory. It has a highly-developed tertiary sector.

What to see

After setting off from the old town, where the Parish Church is and, at the back of it, its old wall can be found, you will reach the Loreto Hermitage, which was restored recently.

Landscape

The terrain of the municipal district is hilly, with some plains and low lying hills. The climate is continental-Mediterranean, temperate and warm in the centre and maritime in the ridges of Subarra and Tosal del Sord. The urban centre has an altitude of 285 m. The landscape is a mixture of scrub vegetation and farm land.
