The town was formerly known as Villanueva de la Reina (Villanueva of the Queen), because it once belonged to an old Moorish queen. Ecclesiastically, meanwhile, it was a subject of the archpriest of Montán. Archaeological findings seem to suggest that the first settlement was Iberian and belonged to the Ilercavones tribe.
