Municipality of Arabic origin. Following the conquest by James I, a Town Charter was granted in 1253 by Guillem de Montcada, in order for Bernat Mestres and 37 settlers to establish the town. In the year 1609, in the seaside district of El Grau, the port and the Watch Tower, now in ruins, were the stage for the expulsion of the Moors.
