St. Michael’s Fortified Church Castle
Formerly known as St. Mary’s.
The El Toro castle rises some 1040 metres in altitude over a small hill from where you can see the town of the same name. The grounds are home to the ruins of a primitive St. Mary's Church which welcomed the villa’s Christian population and is documented as having been built in the mid-13th century. There’s a montane fortress with an irregular floor plan and a church on the same grounds. The purpose was essentially to defend the villa since it was on the old border of the Christian feudal estate.
Protected by the fortress, the population gradually descended towards the plain on the more sheltered slope where the villa is currently located.
