While archaeological findings seem to suggest that the oldest known settlements in the area date back to Iberian times, we can state with greater certainty that its roots lie in the Arabic period. It was conquered by King James I in 1245.

Economy


Its location and geological attributes have led to the development of the industrial sector, which has coexisted with agriculture. Industries include the manufacture of plaster, wood containers, pallets, plastic packaging and recycled plastic. There are also truck and car repair shops and bodyworks. It has a growing services sector.

What to see


Landmarks include the river Palancia and the Roman aqueduct. The municipal park covers some 10,000m2 and features an artificial river. Be sure to visit the San Juan spring and the San Francisco hermitage, as well as the calvary. Also worth visiting are the ruins of the old town walls, the only almázara (olive oil mill) in the village, an old cistern and the aqueduct, belived to be Roman, which stretches over the Melón ravine.

Landscape


Lying 263 metres above sea level, the village is situated to the right of the river Palancia, in a fairly flat spot, surrounded by mountains. It has a Mediterranean, coastal climate.
