Portell de Morella

Believed to be of Arabic origin, the arrival of the Christian troops of the Crown of Aragón also saw the introduction into the area of settlers from Lleida and members of the Knights' Templar, who built the tower that now serves as a church bell tower. A section of the old town walls has also been conserved, bearing witness to the battles of the time.

Economy


The main economic output of the municipality consists of four textile factories, which employ most of the population. Livestock is also important, with several pig and rabbit farms. Other activities include agriculture, services, construction and street vending.

What to see


First visit the Plaza Mayor, the Town Hall, the porch and the area around it. Then head up to the church square, where you will find the stone church and the old castle tower. Adjacent to the church lies the Plaza del Castillo, known as El Corro, and occasionally used as a bullring. Finally, wander down to the hermitage, dedicated to the patron saint, Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza.

Landscape


The landscape is mountainous, with hardly any flat areas. Rather, the landscape mixes mountains with ravines, often extremely deep ones. The climate features very cold winters and hot summers, with extremely short springs and autumns. Altitude: The highest peak is at 1320m (Puerto de las Cabrillas), while the Rambla Celumbres and La Cuba rivers have the lowest elevation, 860m.
