La Vilavella

The ruins that can be found next to present-day Vilavella correspond to the former Muslim castle of Nules, which surrendered to James I in 1238. It was once the head of a barony which, as well as what is now Vilavella, also included several prominent hamlets (alquerías), such as Mezquita, Moncofa, Mascarell, Benicató, and many others. James I gave the castle to Guillem de Montcada in 1251. After the extinction of the Montcada lineage in 1314, the fief passed into the hands of Gilabert de Centelles. At the beginning of the 14th Century, the current settlement of Nules was formed, while Vilavella remained a totally Moorish community until their expulsion in 1609. It was repopulated by 29 families two years later. Of particular importance for the area is the existence of thermal springs, the Fuente Calda, known from the 18th Century for the healing powers of its water. In the 19th century, when the thermal baths are built, Vilavella's fame grows. There is a Hispano-Roman sanctuary located at the top of the mountain of Santa Bárbara.
